The Miracle Man
amit varma - December 30, 2002

To appreciate Adrian Le Roux's real contribution to Indian cricket you have to appreciate the background. It wasn't too long ago that the Indian physiotherapist's job was all encompassing. It involved the odd massage, but he also looked after the players' general wellbeing, which included making tea, being the message boy and all-purpose conduit. Fitness was a nebulous area in Indian cricket; it was vaguely thought of as important, but few understood what it entailed. The breakthrough came with Andrew Leipus, conviction came through John Wright and finally the fulfillment came with Le Roux, who is Indian cricket's first professional fitness trainer. When you see the renewed vigour in Zaheer Khan's run-up, Rahul Dravid's unflagging stamina, the spring in the steps of Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif, raise a toast to this unostentatious man from South Africa, who has gone about devising their training routines, planning their diets, and, most importantly, ensuring that they follow them. For him, it is a job well done; for India, it is a revolution of sorts. Sambit Bal
