Too many cooks
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 27, 2002
Even Perry Mason would have struggled to defend Nasser Hussain. The weapon was a Stuart MacGill full-toss, the location the middle of the MCG. Hussain had blood on his hands, there were 50,451 witnesses - yet somehow he got off scot-free. The question is: how? Everyone knew Hussain was out when he chipped MacGill to Jason Gillespie at mid-on. Gillespie knew it, MacGill knew it, Hussain knew it … and so, almost certainly, did the third umpire Darrell Hair, but he couldn't give Hussain out because those pesky replays weren't 100% conclusive – only about 97 or 98. Whatever the answer is, ICC has to do something, because everyone knows now that when a decision goes to the third umpire it will be given not out. The situation is becoming an embarrassment.
