India name World Cup probables
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 18, 2002

India have announced their list of 30 World Cup probables, as well as a squad of 14 for the one-day series against New Zealand, to which two more names will be added after the second Test at Hamilton. While the squad picked to play New Zealand was along expected lines, there were a few new faces among the World Cup probables. Rohan Gavaskar, son of Indian sporting legend, Sunil Gavaskar, was one of the new faces in the list, along with Gautam Gambhir, the exciting young opening batsman from Delhi, and Avishkar Salvi, the fast bowler from Mumbai who is on a roll in India's domestic circuit.

Venkatesh Prasad came back into the reckoning by figuring in the list of 30, but that is more a reflection on the quality of the other fast bowlers in India than any resurgence on his part. Irfan Pathan Jr, Rakesh Patel and Tinu Yohannan were among the other fast bowlers vying to break into the Indian squad.

There was only one surprise in the 14-man squad selected for the seven one-dayers against New Zealand. Murali Kartik, who had bowled superbly in the one-dayers against West Indies, was omitted from the list, perhaps to allow Anil Kumble to make a comeback. Javagal Srinath also figured in the squad.

With two places up for grabs though, there's still hope for Kartik.
