'It was just a good day'
Wisden CricInfo staff - December 12, 2002

Stephen Fleming, the New Zealand captain, refused to get carried away after India were brushed away for 161 on the first day of the opening Test at the Basin Reserve. Fleming watched in delight as his bowlers ripped through India's vaunted batting line-up - but admitted that Rahul Dravid's fighting 76 had taught his side a lesson.

"We made early inroads but Dravid, the class batsman that he is, played very well and stopped us from a phenomenal 100 that we were looking at bowling India out," said Fleming.

Dravid top-scored with a valiant 76, alone standing tall against the four-pronged New Zealand pace attack on a fast and bouncy track at the Basin Reserve.

New Zealand, playing their 300th Test, were 53 for 1 in reply when bad light stopped play thirty minutes before the scheduled close on the opening day.

"We got a lesson from Dravid," said Fleming. "Perhaps, we can be a bit more positive tomorrow, take the pressure and put it back on Indian bowlers. You can't plan for a quality batsman. He played some good shots, but we missed out at times."

Fleming was unhappy with his team's catching despite restricting the tourists to a small total. "I won't say it was a great day for us," he said. "It was just a good day. Catching behind the wicket was disappointing. We just didn't pride ourselves with the way we caught today. We can't let that happen against their batting line-up."

New Zealand dropped three catches in the slips during the innings, letting off Sourav Ganguly twice and Parthiv Patel once.

"Shane Bond was quick on a bouncy wicket. A couple of chances were tough, but we had to take them."
