'Not good enough' Wisden CricInfo staff - December 10, 2002
The messenger might be different but the theme remained the same. England's performance in their latest match was "just not good enough" according to Marcus Trescothick, standing in as captain for the injured Nasser Hussain. England's quest for their first tour victory was as good as over inside an hour and a half as their top-order batsmen failed against the makeshift attack of the Prime Minister's XI at Canberra. "We lost it in the first half of the game," admitted Trescothick. "It was pretty obvious we didn't bat well enough. The wicket wasn't that bad, it was just a bit slow but we weren't up to it today - we were not good enough." But he denied that all was not well within the England camp. "The morale in the team is fine, it's just when we're on the pitch we're not up to it. I'm not really sure why it's happened, we need a bit more self-belief maybe. There has to be a reason why, we need to assess it pretty quick and get to grips with it. "When the pressure's on we're not producing the goods we know we should be and that we're good enough to do." England's management were relieved that the side got through the match largely unscathed, the only concern being Andy Caddick who left the field before the end to get treatment for a knee injury. "I don't think it's a major thing," said Trescothick. "He was feeling his knee a couple of overs into his last spell and he went off as a precaution to have an ice-pack put on it."
