Aberhart will consider coaching role after World Cup
Lynn McConnell - 19 December 2002

New Zealand cricket coach Denis Aberhart's contract as coach expires after next year's tour of Sri Lanka, but he isn't contemplating his future at the moment.

The Test match and one-day series against India are his immediate priority and then the World Cup.

"I've enjoyed the job and think we have had some good results and I think that as a team we have moved forward.

"I'm not convinced about my decision one way or the other," he said.

The lack of success in improving the side's one-day results had been disappointing, although he said some of the lack of success was due to injuries.

When top players had been available New Zealand had been very competitive.

He also felt New Zealand had developed some depth to allow its game to improve. There was greater fast bowling depth, competition for the wicket-keeping berth while the one problem area was still in spin bowling.

"But there is competition for places in the side," he said.

Aberhart said coaching was not always about results, but processes and development.

"It is an unusual lifestyle because you are away so much for birthdays, wedding anniversaries. You like to be with your family.

"But there are other great experiences and it is nice to have your family there at times," he said.
