Hamilton BHS take out national schoolboys' title

Hamilton Boys' High School are the Gillette Cup champions for 2002.

They beat Wanganui Collegiate in their match yesterday, effectively a final, played at Palmerston North's Fitzherbert Park.

Play on the final day didn't start until 1.20pm due to rain and matches were reduced to 45 overs.

Hamilton BHS won the toss and batted first.

Scores:

Hamilton BHS 221/5 (Bradley Watling 80, Daniel Boughtwood 54, Anton Devich 47 not out) beat Wanganui College 178 (Ben Orton 32, Jack Jefferd 28, Richard Wylie 26 not out, Ben Collier 20; Jason Perrett three for 29, Cameron Weight three for 43, Ben Wilcock two for 41) by 43 runs.

The play-off match for third and fourth was switched to an artificial pitch on Ongley Park.

Kelston Boys' High School won the toss and batted first against Southland Boys' High School.

Scores:

Kelston BHS 198 (James Matthews 41, Shaun Page 37, Paul Matthews 27, Ben Mailata 27, Regan Mauheni four for 35, Mark Beer three for 40) beat Southland BHS 99 (Campbell Cuthill 39, Fa'a'sao Mulivai three for 25) by 99 runs.
