  • Wright happy enough with first effort in New Zealand
    David Ogilvie - 8 December 2002

Indian coach John Wright is not too concerned with the poor first innings batting, and the inability to finish off the Central Districts tail, in the drawn National Bank tour match in Napier which ended early today after a thunderstorm.

Wright said the match had a considerable number of positives and he was certainly not worried by the double failure of star batsman Rahul Dravid.

"Rahul's had a great year. He doesn't look to be too worried about it," Wright said of Dravid's nought and one.

"Rahul probably is technically the most suited of our batsmen to New Zealand conditions."

Dravid scored two centuries against the TelstraClear Black Caps in the Hamilton Test on the last tour in 1998/99 - 190 and 103 not out, showing his liking for New Zealand.

Wright says the ability to wipe opposing teams' tail-enders is something the team has to improve after Central Districts almost doubled its score with its final three wickets in getting through to 295 against India's 209.

"It would have been good to have been able to finish them off. In India where the tracks turn it's not something we find a problem, but here it's just a challenge for this team to work out."

The coach lists the positives from the game as being the batting of Sachin Tendulkar, Sanjay Bangar, Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag - "they all had a good hit."

He listed tall opening bowler Tinu Yohannan "as looking good, while fellow opening bowler Zaheer Khan is recovering well and should be ready for the Test in Wellington.

Khan bruised a knee in the Super Max International in Christchurch last week.

Wright praised the innings of opening batsman Bangar, who finished with 71.

"He's a solid player. But he's also played some pretty telling one-day innings for us. He's a very committed cricketer and if can bat periods of time it's a great help for us."
