Wellington take out Central Region Under-14 girls' tournament
6 December 2002

Wellington ended a nine-year drought when winning the Central Region Under-14 girls' tournament in Masterton yesterday.

The tournament, which started on Sunday, was played out in humid conditions at Lansdowne Park.

Six teams took part in the competition this year with some close matches. After three days of round robin play Wellington and Hawke's Bay played the final while Hutt Valley and Taranaki played off for third and fourth.

Wellington were eight wickets down and 56 runs short of their target but managed to get home to take the Keinzley Agvet Shield.

Hutt Valley needed to score seven runs off the last over but couldn't do it and Taranaki took third place. However, they did improve from sixth to fourth.

Notable performers for Wellington were Sophie Devine, Ella Brockelsby and Celia Holmes while Sarah Blackwell, Esther Scrimshaw and Rebecca Grimmer played well for Hutt Valley.

The winning Wellington team was: Kristen Wong (captain), Sophie Devine, Hannah Pearce, Celia Holmes, Ella Brockelsby, Emily Leslie, Joanne Bailey, Lauren Bailey, Laura Webster, Paige Edgar, Rachael Cederwell, Rebecca Rogers, Lauren Davidson. Coaches: Losi Harford and Maia Lewis.
