Elliott steers Yorkshire home Wisden CricInfo staff - August 31, 2002
Yorkshire 260 for 4 (48 overs; Elliott 128*, Johnson 3-51) beat Somerset 256 for 8 (50 overs; Bowler 67, Hoggard 5-65) by 6 wickets A sparkling unbeaten hundred from Matthew Elliott guided Yorkshire to a six-wicket victory in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy final at a packed Lord's. Elliott, recruited recently as a short-term overseas replacement for Darren Lehmann, hit 128 off just 125 balls to earn Yorkshire their first one-day knockout trophy in 15 years. Yorkshire were chasing a reasonable target of 257 on a slow pitch, but Richard Johnson put Somerset in the driving seat with three early wickets to leave them struggling at 64 for 3. But Elliott and Michael Vaughan (31) steadied the ship with a fourth-wicket partnership of 93, and then Anthony McGrath (46*) joined Elliott in an unbeaten 103-run stand to steer Yorkshire home with two overs to spare. The day had started well for Somerset. Jamie Cox won the toss and chose to bat, and immediately Marcus Trescothick, playing his first match since breaking a thumb on July 17, looked in superb touch. But on 27 he was brilliantly caught by Vaughan in the covers off Matthew Hoggard. It was a rare early bright spot for Hoggard, whose first four overs disappeared for 34. Cox and Peter Bowler took the score to 121 for 1, but Somerset's hopes of a big total faded after Cox fell leg-before to McGrath for 34. Hoggard returned to the attack in the 33rd over and immediately dismissed Bowler for 67, and thereafter the innings rather lost its momentum. Hoggard finished with 5 for 65. The win gave Yorkshire a rare moment of celebration after a desperate season. They are rooted at the foot of the County Championship Division One table - and facing likely relegation - and recently unveiled a massive deficit of over £5million. But for one day, at least, they were able to forget their worries.
