Blackwell gets England call Wisden CricInfo staff - August 30, 2002
England have drafted Somerset allrounder Ian Blackwell into their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy as a replacement for the injured Andrew Flintoff.
Blackwell, 24, was called up on the strength of his performances this summer. In first-class cricket he has scored over 800 runs at almost 40 and taken 20 wickets at 38. His one-day record is less impressive - in 20 matches he has scored 504 runs at 27 and taken 11 wickets at 55.
"Ian has had a very good season for Somerset and shown that he can play match-winning innings in a positive manner," said David Graveney, England's chairman of selectors. "This is now a good opportunity for him to show what he can do at a higher level. We also feel that his left-arm spin bowling will give us extra options in a venue like Sri Lanka."
Blackwell is the second player to be called up as a replacement for the tournament. James Kirtley was brought in to replace the injured Darren Gough earlier this month.
England ODI Squad Nasser Hussain (capt), Ian Blackwell, Paul Collingwood, Andy Caddick, Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard, Ronnie Irani, James Kirtley, Nick Knight, Jeremy Snape, Alec Stewart (wk), Marcus Trescothick, Michael Vaughan, Craig White.
