Gillespie leads Pakistan rout
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 30, 2002

Scorecard

Australia's highest ODI totals

Pakistan might be top of the Wisden ODI table but Australia left nobody in any doubt that they are the team to beat. In a ridiculously one-sided match, Pakistan were crushed by 224 runs, their worst limited-overs defeat.

Chasing a daunting target of 333, Pakistan were effectively beaten inside the first seven overs when they lost their first four wickets for 13, Jason Gillespie and Glenn McGrath taking two apiece.

For the second day running Pakistan won the toss and chose to bowl, but unlike yesterday, when they rolled over Kenya cheaply, their bowlers found Australia's batsmen an altogether different proposition.

Matthew Hayden cracked 146 off 128 balls, including 12 fours and six sixes, adding 128 for the second wicket with Ricky Ponting, as Australia scored a daunting 332 for 5 in their 50 overs.

Pakistan's bowlers lacked any control, spraying the ball wide both sides of the wicket and conceding 32 extras in the first 30 overs of the innings. Abdul Razzaq, who took four wickets against Kenya, was hammered for 26 off his three overs, while Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis both went for more than six an over.
