All in vain Wisden CricInfo staff - August 26, 2002
Nasser Hussain's 12th Test hundred was ultimately in vain, but he again showed what a poor-wicket specialist he is. Hussain loves a scrap, and was again at his best here with the chips down. It was a block-block-thwack sort of innings: over 70% of his runs (78 out of 110) came in boundaries. Our graph shows where Hussain scored his runs. He was at his most fluent against Sanjay Bangar (30 off 28 balls), but he struggled against Zaheer Khan in particular. He made only 12 off 53 balls off him, and was worked over from around the wicket on the fourth evening. England should have known they were in trouble when Hussain reached three figures. He's made eight hundreds in the first innings of a Test, and England have never been beaten. But this was his fourth in the second innings … and England have lost the lot.
