Sachin's 30th century
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 23, 2002

Talk about home from home. Before the Headingley Test Sachin Tendulkar was full of his delight at returning to Yorkshire, where he spent a solid if unspectacular season as a teenager in 1992. And to show just how pleased he was, Tendulkar batted like a true Leeds legend to collect his 30th Test century. Oddly, it was his first Headingley hundred: his highest score with Yorkshire was 93, and he hadn't batted there before in a Test. Only Sunil Gavaskar, India's previous Little Master, has scored more Test tons, with 34. Gavaskar and Tendulkar might be short in stature, but they're long on talent. This Test match is Tendulkar's 99th, and going into it he had 8158 runs, and 29 centuries. After 98 Tests Gavaskar also had 8158 runs ... and 29 centuries. England fans might want to ignore this bit: in his 99th Test Gavaskar, unusually batting at No. 4, hit 236 not out - the highest score by an Indian at the time - against West Indies at Madras in 1983-84. There could be a bit of leather-chasing ahead yet for Caddick & Co. then ...

Tendulkar's 30th century moves him past Don Bradman (29) into outright second on the Test-hundreds list.

And if you take Sachin's 33 one-day centuries into account it stretches his vast lead in the overall international-hundreds table to the little matter of 25 centuries. The Wisden Wizard reveals the man in second place with 38, and it probably isn't the first name that springs to mind.

It's not just Headingley that Tendulkar seems to enjoy. He does well whenever the man bowling at him is sporting those three lions. The Wizard looked at all those who have played ten Tests against England, and Tendulkar's batting average is bettered only by one man. This time the identity of the chart-topper isn't quite so much of a surprise.

Tendulkar is moving stealthily up the list of Test runscorers. As the Wizard shows, among Indians, only that man Gavaskar lies ahead. Next on the overall hit-list is Viv Richards.
