Robin Singh set to lead India
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 22, 2002

Unless a quick resolution is found to the ICC contracts dispute, Robin Singh looks likely to lead a second-string Indian team in next month's Champions Trophy. Singh, 39, has played in 136 one-day internationals, but just a solitary Test, and heads a list of 25 probables, including Venkatesh Prasad and Javagal Srinath. Srinath, who retired from Test cricket after India's defeat in the Caribbean, was not considered for the recent NatWest series in England, but now has a belated chance to push his claims for a World Cup berth. Other fringe players in the squad include the left-arm spinner Murali Kartik, and the seamer Debasis Mohanty, all of whom will relish their opportunity.

The Indian board has been reluctant to announce its list, although the impasse with the senior players shows no sign of blowing over. Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid are among those who have refused to sign the Champions Trophy contract, which says players cannot have endorsement deals that conflict with the ICC sponsors.

The board, however, has kept its options open by not setting a deadline for the cricketers to sign their contracts.

"The offer is still open," said Jagmohan Dalmiya. "We're in touch with our players in England to resolve this issue. But no time-frame has been set for signing the contract."
