India offered one-month contracts Wisden CricInfo staff - August 20, 2002
Jagmohan Dalmiya has attempted to resolve the current stand-off between India's cricketers and the ICC, by asking them to sign a one-month sponsorship agreement. "The ICC has agreed to let Indian cricketers participate in the Champions Trophy if they sign the contracts for this tournament only," said Dalmiya. "This [restricting the contract to one tournament] was proposed by the Indian board and the ICC has agreed to it in writing." By compromising now the terms for any future tournaments could be renegotiated. Dalmiya added that India had already confirmed their participation in the Champions Trophy, which starts in Colombo on September 12, and the selectors had been asked to name 20 probables for the tournament. Some key names, however, such as Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, had been hesitant to sign because of their conflicting sponsorship deals. "We'll select the best available team," said Dalmiya. "We'll not default and give other teams a walk-over, so we decided to participate in the tournament." The players would have the backing of the board if they faced any legal problems or suffered financial losses: "The board is with the players on this issue though the players have to sign," added Dalmiya. "The board is sympathetic with them and understands their concerns."
