Jack Hobbs
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 14, 2002

One of five Wisden Cricketers of the Century (not to mention twice Wisden Cricketer of the Year), 61,237 first-class runs and 197 centuries, knighted for his services to cricket in 1953: no wonder Jack Hobbs was known as The Master. An opening batsman of extraordinary talent both for England and Surrey, Hobbs was the ultimate cricketer. Have a look at the British Pathe clips showing Jack Hobbs doing what he did best. Playing for Surrey against Somerset at Taunton, Hobbs played a leg-side punch to bring up his 126th first-class century. The applause around the ground lasted long enough for The Master to twice acknowledge the congratulations and have a well-earned breather.

Titled "The World's Greatest Batsman" with the message "May 1926 be his best season", the second clip shows a few of Hobbs's cover drives. They're certainly not as stylish as a Tendulkar or a Lara, but just as effective. And was 1926 a good season? Well, not bad - Hobbs averaged just over 80 for Surrey including his highest ever first-class score: 316* against Middlesex at Lord's.

To see a more classical shot, the third clip provides a small glimpse of his superb strokeplay. After a slow-motion shot of Herbert Sutcliffe - Hobbs's opening England partner - Hobbs advances down the wicket and plays a magnificent lofter on-drive over midwicket. And that's in slow-motion too. Watch and learn.
