Don Bradman Wisden CricInfo staff - August 14, 2002
Sir Donald Bradman was the greatest run-getter the game of cricket has ever known. Without doubt the greatest batsman of all time, Bradman scored 6996 Test runs at that now infamous average of 99.94. Wisden Online, in association with British Pathe, have selected the best video clips of The Don in action, both on and off the pitch. The first clip features Bradman on his way to his highest Test score, 334 against England at Headingley in 1930. In that year's Ashes series, Bradman amassed a monumental 974 runs, at the titanic average of 139.14. In the clip he treats us to a late cut, then a slightly ungainly heave down the leg side, followed by a square cut which - surprise, surprise - goes for four. Titled as `Australia's most prolific batsman', the second clip shows a young, fresh-faced looking Don smiling and relaxing before a bit of hard graft in the nets. Even though the footage is black and white, the Don always brought color to his batting, as you can see here. And did you know The Don could crack a few gags too? In esteemed royal and cricketing company, and sporting a natty dinner jacket and tie, the great man complimented Prince Philip's "perfect action for a right-hand offspin bowler" and went on to suggest the England selectors take notice of the young Prince - much to everyone's amusement, especially Philip himself.
