Cool and classy Wisden CricInfo staff - August 12, 2002
Rahul Dravid took India a long way towards safety with a cool, classy 115, his first century against England - but he was given a helping hand by England's bowlers. As our graph shows, Dravid scored more than half his runs off short deliveries (64 out of 115), as England peppered him continually. But only Andrew Flintoff really troubled Dravid with that approach, more than once forcing him to glove rising balls just short of Alec Stewart. Dravid was in control of only 69% of his strokes off Flintoff, as compared to 81% against the rest. Dravid's century was his 11th in Tests, and moved him within 30 of becoming the seventh Indian to make 5000 Test runs. Seven of the previous ten came in draws and this is the seventh outside India. Who said all the Indian batsmen were homers? Rob Smyth is on the staff of Wisden.com. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
