Hogging the limelight Wisden CricInfo staff - August 8, 2002
He might not be able to believe it himself, but Matthew Hoggard is rated as the fifth-best bowler in the world by the PwC Ratings. And the Wisden Wizard shows that he has been the most productive seamer in world cricket this year. Only the inevitable figure of Muttiah Muralitharan has exceeded Hoggard's tally (38 wickets before this match, and counting) in 2002. Hoggard is comfortably ahead of his fellow England seamers: Andrew Caddick (26), Andrew Flintoff (17 before this match), Alex Tudor (9), and of course Darren Gough (0). Hoggard's wickets have come at a healthy average of around 25, and a very acceptable rate of one every eight overs. When you consider that this includes a much-publicised dip in form at the start of the season, and that a year ago Hoggard has had only played two Tests, it is very impressive stuff indeed.
