White back in one-day squad
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 5, 2002

England have announced a 14-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy one-day tournament, which is being held in Sri Lanka in September. There's a recall for Craig White, who made a timely century yesterday, to go with four wickets, as Yorkshire crushed Surrey to reach the final of the C&G Trophy. White also impressed on his Test return at Lord's last week, after missing the midsummer NatWest Series. Of the team selected for that tournament, James Kirtley and Alex Tudor are omitted, along with Graham Thorpe, who recently announced his retirement from one-day international cricket.

Marcus Trescothick is included, despite the broken thumb which is expected to force him to miss the rest of the English season. David Graveney, the chairman of selectors, admitted there were some fitness doubts in the squad: "We do currently have injury concerns with Caddick, Gough and Trescothick, and we will continue to monitor their situation in the run-up to the tournament. At this stage, we expect them to be fit and there is no question of us sending an under-strength team to compete in this tournament, as we regard it as an important part of our preparation for the World Cup.

"But this group of players should not be read as 'the' World Cup squad. We will see how we perform in Sri Lanka, and then make a final decision on our World Cup squad after the first batch of one-day internationals in Australia in December," said Graveney. The 15-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa has to be named by December 31, 2002.

In the Champions Trophy England are in the same preliminary group as India and Zimbabwe. Their opening match is against Zimbabwe on September 18, and they meet India four days later. The group winners will face the top team from the group containing South Africa, West Indies and Kenya in the semi-final. The final is due to be played in Colombo on Sunday, September 29.
