An exciting prospect, Hasantha Fernando is a dazzling strokeplaying batsman and a medium-pace bowler with a deceptive turn of speed. A relative latecomer by Sri Lankan standards, Fernando did not play first-class cricket until he was 22, but prior to that he had captained his school, Prince of Wales, with aplomb. With the World Cup approaching, his chance came in the first one-day match against Bangladesh in August 2002, as Sri Lanka regrouped after a disappointing series in England. Andrew Miller
