Little mastery
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 1, 2002

It wasn't enough to win him the Man of the Match award, but Sachin Tendulkar's innings at Calcutta was a masterclass of batsmanship. With time not really an issue, Tendulkar put England completely out of the series with a methodical unbeaten 200, made off 475 balls. It may have lacked the spark of many of his innings, but it was the ultimate rejoinder to those who say Tendulkar does not make runs when it matters.

Our graph shows that Tendulkar was in control of 85% of his shots, an outstanding performance. This figure is usually around 75 - indeed, in Brian Lara's 106 the figure was only 72% - but Tendulkar looked in prime form from the moment he eased his first ball, from Ted Dexter, to long-on for four.

There were 14 fours in all, and two big sixes: a whiplash hook that silenced even Fred Trueman, the bowler, and a dismissive flat pull off Ian Botham. All this, and in his home country as well.
