Umpire Randell released on parole
Wisden CricInfo staff - April 30, 2002

Former Australian Test umpire Steve Randell, who was jailed for sexually assaulting girls, was released on parole on Tuesday. Randell, 45, who officiated in an Australian record 36 Tests, left Tasmania's Hayes Prison Farm before dawn after serving two years and nine months of a four-year sentence. He was met at the prison gates by a family member and driven away.

Randell was jailed in 1999 after being convicted of 15 charges of indecent assault against nine girls, all aged between 11 and 12. The offences were committed in 1981 and 1982, when Randell had been teaching at a Catholic primary school in Burnie in northern Tasmania.

Randell will remain under the supervision of a parole officer until August next year.
