Jaffer saves India's blushes
Wisden CricInfo staff - April 28, 2002

Busta XI 437 (W Hinds 175, Smith 91, Jacobs 55*, Yohannan 3-84) drew with the Indians 150 (Mongia 67, Sarandeep 32, Ramnarine 4-49) and 158 for 2 (Jaffer 62, Dasgupta 54* ) Wasim Jaffer and Deep Dasgupta slammed half-centuries to help the Indians draw their three-day tour match against a Busta XI in St Lucia today.

Jaffer, the opener who is pushing for a Test recall, scored 62 and Dasgupta made an unbeaten 54 as the Indians reached 158 for 2 in their second innings by the end of the third and final day after conceding a first-innings lead of 287.

Jaffer and Dasgupta put on 101 for the second wicket, and ensured that their team did not collapse for the second time in the match. Earlier the Indians had failed to avoid the follow-on, after being shot out for 150 in their first innings in reply to the Busta XI's 437. Dinanath Ramnarine, the legspinner, took 4 for 49 in 23 disciplined overs.

Dinesh Mongia, in his first game of the tour, was the lone batsman to defy the spin attack, scoring 67 off 185 balls with the help of one six and eight fours. He received valuable support from tail-ender Sarandeep Singh, who made 32, but their efforts were not enough to make the Busta XI bat again after the Indians had lost seven wickets for 73 on Saturday.

Offspinner Gereth Breese broke the 50-run stand for the eighth wicket when he had Sarandeep caught by Runako Morton at first slip. Sarandeep hit five fours in his defiant 52-ball knock.

However, the Indians batted better in their second innings - Jaffer and Dasgupta applied themselves well to deny the hosts success for more than a session after the early dismissal of Shiv Sunder Das, who was trapped leg-before for 0 by Pedro Collins in the opening over, offering no stroke.

Jaffer, who failed to score in the first innings, made the most of the opportunity to regain form, and hit seven fours in his 156-ball knock. Dasgupta kept out 188 balls, and struck five fours.

The Busta XI captain Ridley Jacobs rested left-arm paceman Collins after four overs and Ramnarine after 10, after hearing that both bowlers had been named in the West Indian squad for the third Test, which starts in Barbados on Thursday.

Jacobs himself also found a place in the Test team, replacing Junior Murray who managed to score just one run in the first two matches.
