The chase to end all chases
Wisden CricInfo staff - April 19, 2002

With West Indies and India renewing hostilities in Trinidad, we delve into the Wisden Almanack archive to pick out a memorable Test match between the sides. Here we go back 26 years, to the third match of the 1975-76 series, also at the Queen's Park Oval It may be all the rage these days to talk of player fatigue and crowded fixture lists, but when West Indies and India met in the Caribbean in 1975-76, both sides were on their chinstraps. West Indies, for their part, had just returned from an arduous and embarrassing tour of Australia, where they had been pummelled into submission by Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson, while the Indians entered the series off the back of a 62-hour flight from New Zealand.

The upshot? One of the most memorable series ever played between the two nations. West Indies eventually claimed the spoils when India's battered and bruised side failed to complete their final innings of the tour at Sabina Park – Bishan Bedi declared on 97 for 5, with five men absent hurt – but the highlight was undoubtedly India's epic win at Trinidad. Set a monstrous 403 to win, after Viv Richards and Alvin Kallicharran had both scored centuries, Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath guided India to the brink, before Brijesh Patel and Madan Lal carried them home against a weary spin attack.
