Close India 395 for 7 (Dravid 144*, Tendulkar 79) drew with West Indies 501 (Hooper 233, Chanderpaul 140) Play was called off early on the final day of the first Test between West Indies and India at the Bourda Oval in Georgetown, Guyana. Overnight storms had deluged the outfield, and with drainage facilities seemingly inadequate, parts of it were ankle-deep in water. It was an acceptable start to the series for India. The chances are that they would have struggled at a venue like Barbados, but they had a relatively soft beginning here. West Indies will also be satisfied: they had the upper hand over India for much of the match, and Carl Hooper and Shivnarine Chanderpaul's innings will give them plenty of confidence for the coming matches. Mahendra Nagamootoo's battle against Sachin Tendulkar is also one to watch. Nagamootoo won the first round, and West Indies will hope he keeps that momentum going.
Teams India 1 Shiv Sunder Das, 2 Deep Dasgupta (wk), 3 Sourav Ganguly (capt), 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Rahul Dravid, 6 VVS Laxman, 7 Sanjay Bangar, 8 Anil Kumble, 9 Javagal Srinath, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Sarandeep Singh. Amit Varma is assistant editor of Wisden.com India. Day 4 Bulletin
