Carl and Shiv's Test-bests
Wisden CricInfo staff - April 13, 2002

  • Shivnarine Chanderpaul, with his 66th run, became the 20th West Indian and the 120th batsman to reach the landmark of 3000 Test runs. He was appearing in his 52nd Test and 86th innings. He now has 3074 runs (avg. 39.92).
  • Carl Hooper, when he reached 133, became the sixth West Indies batsman to aggregate 1000 runs while leading the side. He now has 1100 runs, at an average of 52.38, in 13 tests as captain.

  • Both Hooper (233) and Chanderpaul (140) posted their highest Test scores. Hooper's previous best was his unbeaten 178 against Pakistan at St. John's in May 1993, while Chanderpaul's best was the unbeaten 137 he had scored against India at Bridgetown in March 1997.

  • Hooper's double hundred was the first by a Test captain since October 1999, when Sachin Tendulkar made 217 against New Zealand at Ahmedabad.

  • Hooper's score was the highest ever by a No. 5 batsman against India, edging ahead of Andy Flower's 232 not out at Nagpur in November 2000.

Hooper's 233 was also the highest by a West Indies batsman at No. 5, well ahead of the unbeaten 208 by Jimmy Adams against New Zealand at St John's in April 1996 and the 208 by Viv Richards against Australia at Melbourne in December 1984. It was also the highest score by a West Indies captain at home, ahead of Denis Atkinson's 219 against Australia at Bridegtown in May 1955.

  • The fifth wicket partnership of 293 runs between Hooper and Chanderpaul was the best ever for this wicket by any team against India, bettering the 254 runs put together by Englishmen Keith Fletcher and Tony Greig at the Brabourne Stadium, Bombay in February 1973.
