Harbhajan hopes to play Wisden CricInfo staff - April 9, 2002
Top Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, who suffered a shoulder injury in a practice game, is optimistic that he will be fit to play in the opening Test against the West Indies at Bourda on Thursday. "I'm optimistic of playing the Test," said Harbhajan after returning from Trinidad where his shoulder was examined. "I felt severe pain after throwing the ball in the practice match, but am feeling much better now. I think I should be able to play." Indian physiotherapist Andrew Leipus said: "I'm hopeful, but there's no guarantee. We are waiting for the final medical report. He'll undergo a fitness test a day before the match. Only then it'll be known whether he's fit to play," he said. Harbhajan, seven short of 100 Test wickets, suffered the injury while throwing from the deep during a three-day game against Guyana Board President's XI on Sunday. Sarandeep Singh, who has played two Tests, has already been asked to join the team as cover in case Harbhajan is ruled out of the Test. Harbhajan's absence will be a big blow for India, looking for their first Test series win outside the subcontinent in 16 years.
