Having a smashing time
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 24, 2001

South Africa's 363 for 3 in 50 overs against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo on Sunday (Sept 23) was their highest total in ODIs. Their previous-best was 328 for 3 against Holland at Rawalpindi during the 1995-96 World Cup, and their highest against another Test-playing country was 324 for 4 against New Zealand at Centurion in 2000-01. It was also the highest total Zimbabwe had conceded in ODIs – previously 313 for 7 by Sri Lanka at New Plymouth in New Zealand during the 1991-92 World Cup.

Only four higher totals have been recorded in ODIs: 398 for 5 by Sri Lanka v Kenya at Kandy in 1995-96; 376 for 2 by India v New Zealand at Hyderabad in 1999-2000; 373 for 6 by India v Sri Lanka at Taunton in 1999; and 371 for 9 by Pakistan v Sri Lanka at Nairobi in 1996-97. England also made 363 for 7 against Pakistan at Trent Bridge in 1992, in a 55-over match.

Herschelle Gibbs's 84-ball hundred was the fastest for South Africa in ODIs. The previous-fastest was 89 balls, by Nicky Boje against New Zealand at Potchefstroom in 2000-01. Gibbs's 125 was his sixth ODI hundred, and equalled his highest score, made against West Indies at Port Elizabeth in 1998-99.

Both Heath Streak (80) and Travis Friend (73) conceded more runs in an ODI innings than any other previous Zimbabwean bowler. The previous record of 72 runs conceded was set by Kevin Duers against Sri Lanka at New Plymouth in New Zealand during the 1991-92 World Cup, and equalled by Pommie Mbangwa against Pakistan at Harare in 1997-98.

South Africa have only exceeded this victory by a runs margin once against a Test-playing country – they beat Pakistan by 157 runs at Johannesburg in 1994-95. However, South Africa did beat Kenya by 202 runs at Nairobi in 1996-97.
