The last supper Wisden CricInfo staff - September 19, 2001
Full list of winners Last night's annual PCA (Professional Cricketers' Association) Awards followed a now familiar format - food, speeches and awards followed, for those who hadn't over-indulged to the extent of losing control of their limbs, by dancing to slush from former Spandau Ballet crooner Tony Hadley and then the Mark Butcher band. The menu included chargrilled vegetables and rump of lamb, but most people seemed more interested in other refreshment - especially Phil Tufnell who made a slurring speech as he presented the Sports.com Cricketer of the Year award to Marcus Trescothick.
Some winners were more expected than others. There were no gasps when Michael Atherton won the ECB Special award, nor when he performed a typically brief thank-you-and-good-night speech. But the Young Player of the Year award raised a few eyebrows - it went to Durham's Nicky Peng who averaged 26 this season rather than Ian Bell who averaged 64. David Fulton, scorer of 1892 first-class runs but overlooked for any of this winter's tours, was the PCA player of the year, nominated by his peers - the professional cricketers of England. He made one of the better acceptance speeches: "Having stood at short leg and passed on the odd bit of advice to most of the players who were voting it is nice to know that they don't all hate me. But on a serious note, it is the ultimate praise to be voted by your peers and, I suppose, a mark of respect. To be respected by them is the reason every player plays the game." The one drawback of an increasingly commercial ceremony is the crossover between sponsor and sponsored. Mark Butcher won the Slazenger Sheer Instinct award, for his 173 not out in the Headingley Test, while being sponsored by Slazenger. No one doubted that he had earned the award, but there could have been some acknowledgement that he is one of Slazenger's paid players. But in a world where Lord MacLaurin, chairman of the ECB, is also the chairman of Vodafone - the England team's main sponsor - and David Graveney is both chief executive of the PCA and chairman of the England selectors, this oversight should have come as no surprise. |
