A see-saw final day of the season ended with Kent sneaking past Leicestershire to take the National League Division one title.

Kent began the day needing to win at Edgbaston and hope that Leicestershire lost to Nottinghamshire, a game that was never going to be easy as Nottinghamshire needed to win to avoid relegation.

Kent found the going hard against Warwickshire but 90 from 102 balls by James Hockley gave the innings backbone and Robert Key (50 from 35 balls) chipped in with vital runs at the end as they reached 216 for 6.

Warwickshire started their chase confidently and at 153 for 2 with overs in hand, Kent's title ambitions seemed over. But Min Patel's dismissal of Mark Wagh triggered an astonishing collapse, engineered by Andrew Symonds who ripped through the middle-order with five wickets in six overs to secure a remarkable win.

At Trent Bridge, Leicestershire, whose one-day form has deteriorated in recent weeks, never really got going. Having been put in to bat they struggled from the off and had to thank a breezy fourth-wicket partnership of 59 between Darren Stevens (35) and Neil Burns (44) for kick-starting their innings after they had slumped to 51 for 4.

Defending 185 they had to take early Nottinghamshire wickets but John Morris, in his final game, unleashed a barrage of boundaries before being run out for 57. Out-of-contract Greg Blewett took over with 48 before a mini-collapse gave Leicestershire a glimmer of hope, but Kevin Pietersen hit out to guide Nottinghamshire to safety.

Nottinghamshire's last-gasp win consigned Gloucestershire, who crashed to a 36-run defeat at the hands of Surrey, to relegation. They appeared to be safe when they restricted Surrey to 157 for 8, but their reply never got going. Tim Murtagh (9-4-15-3) started the slide and Adam Hollioake (8-2-19-4) completed the rout.

The one game with nothing at stake saw Somerset beat Northamptonshire by 12 runs, thanks to an unbeaten century from Michael Burns.
