Wisden CricInfo staff - September 14, 2001
Derbyshire v Warwickshire Nottinghamshire v Hampshire
Sussex v Gloucestershire
Worcestershire v Middlesex
Final table
Derbyshire 106 and 194, Warwickshire 400 for 6 dec. Warwickshire win by an innings and 100 runs Derby
Points Derbyshire 2, Warwickshire 20
What it means Victory here has given Warwickshire the third promotion place, after Sussex and Hampshire.
Story of the day A comprehensive victory for Warwickshire has ensured that they will play Division One cricket next season. Dougie Brown was the hero of the hour with 6 for 60, as Derbyshire succumbed to an innings defeat before lunch. Only a last-wicket partnership of 69 between Tom Lungley (47 off 57 balls) and Lian Wharton (13*) delayed the inevitable and gave Derbyshire some respectability.
Middlesex 349 and 368 for 4 dec, Worcestershire 434 and 179 for 4. Match drawn. Worcester
Points Worcestershire 12, Middlesex 10
What it means After Warwickshire's victory, Middlesex will now stay in Division Two; Worcester, two off the bottom, had nothing but pride to play for.
Story of the day Middlesex set their hosts 284 off a minimum of 48 overs for victory. Their batting hero of the afternoon was Ed Joyce, with his maiden first-class hundred (108*). Worcestershire's run-chase was dented when they lost Andy Bichel, Phil Weston and first-innings centurion Anurag Singh in quick succession. Graeme Hick's 59* steadied the ship, and the game finished in an honourable draw. Middlesex, having led Division Two for much of the season, will reflect on the three lost matches that scuppered their promotion bid.
Nottinghamshire 245 and 314 for 7 dec, Hampshire 259 for 4 dec and 245 for 6. Match drawn. Trent Bridge
Points Nottinghamshire 6, Hampshire 9
What it means Hampshire had gained the three bonus points they needed to secure promotion and take second place after champions Sussex. Nottinghamshire, one off the bottom, had nothing to gain.
Story of the day Hampshire set off in hot pursuit of their victory target of 301. They lost Derek Kenway with only 9 runs on the board, but Giles White (112) and Will Kendall (72) put on 138 runs together for the second wicket. Thereafter the innings fell away and the draw became the inevitable result.
Sussex 384 and 18 for 0, Gloucestershire 228 and 173. Sussex win by 10 wickets. Hove
Points Gloucestershire 4, Sussex 19
What it means Sussex, already promoted, are now the Division Two champions. Gloucestershire needed a win for any chance of promotion, and now know they will spend next season in Division Two. Story of the day Sussex cruised to an easy victory, after earlier enforcing the follow-on. James Kirtley was the star of the show, with 6 for 34, as Gloucestershire, following on, collapsed to 173 all out in their second innings, with four batsmen failing to register a score.
