Glamorgan (258 all out) v Surrey - Cardiff
Points so far Glamorgan 2, Surrey 3
Who needs what Glamorgan, already relegated, are fighting only for pride. Surrey, fifth, need four points to be safe from demotion.
Story of the day Despite an unbeaten 70 by Robert Croft, off only 83 balls, Surrey moved smoothly towards Division 1 safety. Their bowlers shared out the Glamorgan wickets like matrons at a soup kitchen, but the ones with the fattest tummies were Ben Hollioake, opening the bowling in the absence of Alex Tudor and who took the first two wickets to fall, and Ed Giddins, who was costly but tasty and who ended up with 4 for 71. Michael Powell (56) and J Hughes (38) were the only Glamorgan players other than Croft to make it past 25.
Kent (117 for 3) v Lancs - Old Trafford
(Rain; only 28 overs possible)
Points so far Kent 0, Lancs 1
Who needs what Lancs, sixth, need to stay five points ahead of Northants to avoid relegation. Kent, third, need 17 more points to overtake Somerset and two points to remain ahead of Leicester.
Story of the day: Rain, rain and more rain kept Lancastrians in the dampest of spirits. A rare failure from David Fulton (0) plus some catching practice from Ed Smith gave Glenn Chapple early wickets, but there was only one more breakthrough for Lancashire. Andrew Symonds was caught and bowled by Muttiah Muralitharan before the rain started. Robert Key will resume tomorrow on 42 not out.
Northants (382 for 5) v Somerset - Taunton
Points so far Northampton 4, Somerset 1

Story of the day: Northants batsmen had one of their best days of the season – Mike Hussey (192*) and Russell Warren (144) made hay and a magnificent third-wicket partnership of 287. This could yet be a sweet adieu for David Ripley. Steffan Jones was the only Somerset player to deserve a warm soak in the bath – he celebrated his favourable mention by John Buchanan in the Sunday Times by taking 3 for 80.
Essex (99 for 3) v Yorkshire - Scarborough
Rain; only 36 overs possible)
Points so far Essex 0, Yorkshire 1
Who needs what Essex, demoted and demoralised, just want the season to end. Yorkshire have already won the Championship.
Story of the day: Two of Yorkshire's England tourists, Matthew Hoggard and Richard Dawson, made the breakthroughs during a sodden day at the seaside. Essex, who have beaten Yorkshire only once in the Championship in seven years, played a young side.Their highest scorer was Richard Clinton with 33 not out.
