Dagnall edges Warwickshire closer to promotion
Wisden CricInfo staff - September 12, 2001
Derbyshire (106) v Warwickshire (1-0) - Derby (Rain; only 43 overs play possible) Points so far: Derbyshire 0, Warwickshire 3
Who needs what Warwickshire, in fourth, need to gain four more points from their game than Gloucestershire, in third, get from theirs – if Middlesex, in fifth, win then Warwickshire would also need to win. Bottom-placed Derbyshire have nothing to play for.
Story of the day Easy to see why Derbyshire finished bottom as they were blown away in just 42.2 overs by Charlie Dagnall (with a career-best 6-50) and Dougie Brown (4-20). Although the overcast conditions favoured the seam bowlers, there was little excuse for Derbyshire's feeble innings. Only acting captain Michael Di Venuto (36) offered any real resistance.
Worcestershire v Middlesex (258 for 6) - Worcester
(Rain; only 72 overs play possible)
Points so far Worcestershire 2, Middlesex 2
Who needs what Middlesex, in fifth place going into the match, must win and rely on Gloucestershire and Warwickshire not winning their games; Worcestershire, two off the bottom, have nothing but pride to play for.
Story of the day Middlesex got off to a flier with Strauss (92) and Weston (106) putting on 143 for the first wicket before Hick removed Strauss to trigger a mini-collapse, four wickets falling for 15 runs. Weston and Weekes (45*) gave Middlesex back the initiative with a stand of 95 before Hick, who finished with 3-33, returned just before rain ended play early to grab two more wickets.
Sussex (263 for 6) v Gloucestershire - Hove
(Rain; only 75.1 overs play possible)
Points so far Gloucestershire 2, Sussex 2
Who needs what Sussex are already promoted and just need to match Hampshire's result to secure the title; Gloucestershire, in third, lead Warwickshire by 3.25 points and Middlesex by seven points and need a win (and at least five bonus points) to ensure they secure promotion.
Story of the day Sussex struggled in the morning, slipping to 70 for 5 before Robin Martin-Jenkins (111* - 151 mins off 126 balls, 17x4, 2x6) and Michael Yardy (42) put on 94 for the sixth wicket. Mark Davis (43*) then joined Martin-Jenkins and the pair had put on 99 by the close.
Nottinghamshire (164 for 5) v Hampshire - Nottingham
(Rain; only 46 overs play possible)
Points so far Nottinghamshire 0, Hampshire 1
Who needs what Hampshire need just three bonus points to secure promotion and if they get seven points more than leaders Sussex they could even pip them to the title; Nottinghamshire, one off the bottom, could finish sixth if they get five points more than Worcestershire.
Story of the day One of frustration as the weather limited Hampshire's progress. Morris (3-77) and Mullally (2-27) made the most of favourable conditions. Usman Afzaal (75*) rescued Nottinghamshire from a parlous 56 for 4 but Morris had Shafayat (42) caught behind in the final overs to put Hampshire back in control.
