Zimbabwe call up Hondo Wisden CricInfo staff - September 1, 2001
HARARE (Reuters): The Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) has named a 17-man squad, including new cap Douglas Hondo, for the forthcoming Test and one-day series against South Africa in September. The team will be captained by fast bowler Heath Streak and includes schoolboys Tatenda Taibu and Hamilton Masakadza who made their Test debuts against West Indies in July as well as seamer Hondo, 22. Masakadza became the youngest player on debut to score a Test century when he compiled 119 against West Indies at the Harare Sports Club. The 18-year-olds will be taking their final school exams in November and will miss classes while on national duty. "The situation has been addressed," ZCU chief executive Dave Ellman-Brown told Reuters. "The headmaster and the parents of both boys have agreed to let them play, and we have arranged for them to take extra lessons at a private college." Wicketkeeper Andy Flower is also included in the squad after missing the West Indies series following thumb surgery. Other players returning from injury are fast bowlers Henry Olonga (back) and Brighton Watambwa (hamstring), while batsman Stuart Carlisle has recovered from a broken finger.
