A fluent and correct middle-order batsman, Jacob Martin has been thecornerstone of Baroda's recent domestic revival. In 1998-99, he became the sixth man - and the first for Baroda - to score more than 1000 Ranji Trophy runs in a single season. A national call-up was inevitable, but he had to wait until two Indian teams participated in simultaneous one-day tournaments before making his debut. Gifted with the ability to bat for long periods, Martin is more suited to the longer version of the game, but is yet to play a Test match. He occasionally bowls legbreaks. Rahul Bhattacharya
