Snedden on issues of the moment
Lynn McConnell - 30 October 2001

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden believes left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori could be back in Australia in time to prepare for the second Test in Hobart.

That would possibly see him playing the four-day match against South Australia in Adelaide from November 16-19.

"If the rate of improvement at the moment continues at the way it is everything would be on track for him to be back for the second Test," Snedden said.

He added that if was able to be considered for the second Test, he would probably have had to have played in the South Australian game.

Snedden also said today that New Zealand's summer next year will involve three Test matches and five One-Day Internationals at home for the CLEAR Black Caps before they fly to South Africa for the World Cup.

There was no need for more games at home, either another Test match, or more ODIs, because the Indian tour was scheduled to finish in mid-January with the New Zealand team leaving for South Africa about a week later.

The Test matches may all be played in December.

Snedden is happy with New Zealand's draw for the World Cup.

He hasn't discussed the nature of the draw with the side but he said having the three toughest games of the preliminary round first would suit New Zealand.

"We'll be coming straight off our home season and in the latter stages of the preliminary round, the run rate could become quite important.

"Our draw will give us a chance to size that up more easily," he said.

With games against the tournament lesser lights earlier in the draw, New Zealand could possibly go into the games a little more tentatively with results not going 100% in their favour.

But this draw allowed New Zealand to go into the tournament positively, actively pursuing a Super Six place.

"Five of our six games are at altitude and that will be fine as our base at Centurion is at altitude and the only lengthy travel we have is to Nairobi with good space on either side of the game for the travel," he said.
