Australians punish New Zealand Academy lapses for third win
Lynn McConnell - 26 October 2001

New Zealand's Cricket Academy's bad luck with injuries has been a boon for the country's standby players for the tour of Australia, as several players have now featured in games against the Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy at Lincoln University.

Kyle Mills joined James Franklin in the attack today, with Cleighten Cornelius and Aaron Redmond already brought in from outside to assist the injury-plagued Kiwis.

That hasn't deterred the Australians however, as they won the third successive one-dayer today by 58 runs.

Batting first after Cameron White won another toss, on another grey Canterbury day the Australians found Mills' pace and out-swing a little difficult to handle and he picked up two wickets.

But these Australians never seem to lose their scoring momentum and Jarrad Burke and Beau Casson scored 50 in 54 minutes for the third wicket with Burke scoring a half century off 69 balls.

Dropped when on 56 from off-spinner Nathan McCullum's bowling, Burke made the home team pay as he pounded the ball all over the large Bert Sutcliffe Oval. He was also missed from a stumping chance when on 77 and when the century partnership was posted, it had taken only 75 minutes and 110 balls.

None of the New Zealand bowlers were spared as they went to 150 runs in 104 minutes and 153 balls.

Finally, New Zealand left-arm fast-medium bowler Franklin brought an end to the carnage when Burke played a ball on and was out for 95 from 106 balls. Casson wasn't far behind him when he was bowled by Redmond for 82 off 92 balls.

Skipper White steadied a prospective collapse at 217/5 by using some innovative strokeplay. He also found an ally in Mark Cosgrove to take 50 off 37 balls for the sixth wicket and White's half century took 36 balls. He was not out when the CBCA innings ended at 294/6.

On a pitch clearly suited to batting New Zealand made a bold start, despite the loss of Jamie How. Brendon McCullum and Nick Horsley added 87 runs for the second wicket, McCullum scoring his 50 off 42 balls. Horsley scored 26 in 86 minutes before Shanan Stewart scored at run a ball pace for his 59 and at 192/3, the chase was on.

But White undid McCullum, Stewart, Jonathon McNamee, Mills and Cornelius as New Zealand lost its last six wickets for 54 runs. White had six for 43 from 9.3 overs.

Franklin's innings ended when he was given out for obstructing the field with the ball hitting him on the pad as the bowler attempted to retrieve the ball.

New Zealand's Academy were all out for 246.
