'Bombay is safer than London'
Wisden CricInfo staff - October 27, 2001

As the five undecided tourists mull over whether to climb on that aeroplane on November 13, two England players have today said that they will feel safer in India than London. Mark Ramprakash told the Daily Express newspaper that:

"Myself and my wife feel that being in London and England presents much more of a risk than being in India. There's probably more danger going to Heathrow or using the Tube than visiting Bangalore and Bombay. "No-one can give us a 100% guarantee about safety but I don't think life should grind to a halt because of that."

At the same time Michael Vaughan of Yorkshire has said that he is happy to tour following reassurances about security from the ECB and the British Foreign Office.

"If the tour was starting tomorrow then as things stand I'd be happy to go," he said. "We are probably safer on tour than we are in London.

"Of course I understand how the other guys are feeling. I haven't got little kids to worry about but Ashley Giles' wife is pregnant and Andy Caddick's has just given birth."

The tour to India is a great chance for both Ramprakash and Vaughan to cement their places in the team. The five men yet to say yes or no to the tour -- Andy Caddick, Craig White, Ashley Giles, Marcus Trescothick and Robert Croft -- have been told to let the ECB know of their decision by the end of the weekend.
