Ramps out, Vaughan in
Wisden CricInfo staff - October 17, 2001

England have dropped Mark Ramprakash from their winning team in Zimbabwe and recalled Michael Vaughan for the one-day series in India and New Zealand early next year. Also back in the fold are the first-choice spearheads, Darren Gough and Andy Caddick, plus Ashley Giles and Craig White, who missed the Zimbabwe trip through injury. Owais Shah keeps his place, despite being given just one innings to shine in that series -- he made a second-ball duck. As well as Ramprakash, who was ever-present in Zimbabwe, it's goodbye and thank-you and don't-call-us to the spare spinner, Paul Grayson, and three fast bowlers, James Kirtley, Ryan Sidebottom and Chris Silverwood.

"Kirtley, Sidebottom and Silverwood all provided strong competition for places in the pace-bowling department," said the chairman of selectors, David Graveney, who stressed that Kirtley's omission had nothing to do with the aspersions cast on his action in Zimbabwe by the match referee Naushad Ali. "He remains very much part of our future plans," added Graveney.

The inclusion of Vaughan at the expense of Ramprakash was a surprise, but Graveney explained that Vaughan would provide cover "for the established openers" as well as "competition for places in the middle order".

The return of Gough was a welcome one, said Graveney. But he reiterated that Gough, who had made himself unavailable for the Test series in India, would not be considered for the Test series in New Zealand that follows the one-day matches, "regardless of his performances".

Graveney added: "We have chosen this squad with a view to building a one-day side for the next World Cup in South Africa and beyond."

The India series is due to take place from January 22 to February 3. England then go straight on to New Zealand, where they play another set of five games from February 13 to 26.
