A rare clean sweep
Wisden CricInfo staff - October 13, 2001

This is England's first 5-0 victory in one-day cricket. They won 4-1 in one-day series against India in 1984-85 and Pakistan in 1992. England did win the 1959 Test series against India 5-0, and also won the 1978-79 Ashes series in Australia 5-1. England are the only second team to win every game of a one-day series of four or more matches overseas, and the eighth in all. The full list is: India 0 West Indies 5 1983-84
West Indies 5 New Zealand 0 1984-85
Pakistan 4 Sri Lanka 0 1985-86
West Indies 5 Pakistan 0 1987-88
West Indies 5 India 0 1988-89
India 4 New Zealand 0 1988-89
New Zealand 5 West Indies 0 1999-2000
Zimbabwe 0 England 5 2000-01

South Africa beat New Zealand 5-0 in a six-match series in 2000-01, with the other match rained off.

This victory is England's eighth on the trot in Zimbabwe, and their 12th in the last 13 matches between the sides. Before that Zimbabwe had won six out of eight.

Zimbabwe have lost 12 one-dayers in a row, and excluding matches against Bangladesh they have lost the last 17.

Paul Collingwood's 56 not out was his second consecutive half-century, following his 77 in the fourth match on Wednesday.

Grant Flower's 104 was his fifth one-day hundred, in 166 matches. It was also his first against England and his second at Bulawayo. Among Zimbabweans, only Alistair Campbell, who has seven, has made more. The only other hundred for Zimbabwe in 21 matches against England was his brother Andy's 142 not out at Harare last week. Grant Flower's scores in this series are: 0, 2, 1, 96 and 104. He averaged 1 at Harare and exactly 100 at Bulawayo.

Chris Silverwood took 3 for 43, his best figures in one-day internationals. And he doubled his one-day wicket tally to boot. Before today he had three wickets in six matches, with best figures of 2 for 27 on this ground in 1996-97. Silverwood is the ninth England bowler to return his best one-day figures on this tour. Four were debutants (Matthew Hoggard, James Kirtley, Jeremy Snape and Ryan Sidebottom) and three took their first one-day wickets (Mark Ramprakash, Paul Collingwood and Paul Grayson). The other is Ben Hollioake.

Silverwood is rapidly becoming England's horse for African courses. He has now taken 17 international wickets, and all bar one have come in South Africa or Zimbabwe. Silverwood has played each of his five Tests in this part of the world, and four of his seven one-dayers in Zimbabwe. He has only once played for England in England, in an ODI against Australia at Lord's in 1997.

Jeremy Snape also took 3 for 43, which are also his best one-day figures, surpassing his 2 for 38 in the second match at Harare.
