Wash-out in Kandy Wisden CricInfo staff - November 23, 2001
Stumps West Indies 39 for 1 (Gayle 25*, Sarwan 12*), Sri Lanka 288 Rain forced an early end to the third day in Kandy, with only just over an hour's play possible. An overnight downpour had left the outfield sodden, and the drizzle returned today to further frustrate players and spectators alike. Sri Lanka could only add 15 more runs to their overnight score. Nuwan Zoysa's lively knock was ended when he was clean bowled by Pedro Collins for 23 (281 for 9). It was revenge for Collins after Zoysa had smashed eight runs off his previous over. Mervyn Dillon then struck to remove last man Muttiah Muralitharan for 4, caught by Colin Stuart at mid-on. Zoysa's successful day continued when he dismissed Daren Ganga with his first ball. Ganga could only watch helplessly as the edge flew to the safe hands of Mahela Jayawardene at third slip (8 for 1). Chris Gayle and Ramnaresh Sarwan saw the tourists through to the watery close with few alarms. Gayle was in particularly fluent form, hitting 25 off 32 balls.
Teams West Indies 1 Daren Ganga, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Brian Lara, 5 Carl Hooper (capt), 6 Marlon Samuels, 7 Ridley Jacobs (wk), 8 Mervyn Dillon, 9 Colin Stuart, 10 Dinanath Ramnarine, 11 Pedro Collins.
