Sri Lanka hold firm - but rain returns Wisden CricInfo staff - November 22, 2001
Close Sri Lanka 273 for 8 (Zoysa 15*, Bandaratilleke 9*) After the unorthodox thrills of the opening day, it was back to business as normal at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy this morning. Persistent rain forced play to be abandoned for the day after a truncated morning session, after Sri Lanka's lower order had taken them to a respectable 273 for 8. West Indies had to wait over an hour for their first breakthrough of the day as Hashan Tillekeratne and Thilan Samaraweera batted with determination for an 80-run partnership. The new ball did the trick though, as Tillekeratne tried to pull Pedro Collins, only to chop the ball onto his stumps. He had made 87 from 174 balls. Mervyn Dillon, happily restored to the West Indian attack, then bowled a jaffa of a legcutter which Samaraweera could only edge behind to Ridley Jacobs (249 for 7). Samaraweera's 29 had taken two hours and, while it couldn't be described as swashbuckling, he had provided stout resistance for Sri Lanka. Collins then struck again to remove Chaminda Vaas for a 21-minute duck, comfortably taken at second slip by Carl Hooper. On 249 for 8, Sri Lanka were wobbling, but Nuwan Zoysa and Niroshan Bandaratilleke had other ideas. By lunch they had added a further 24 runs, with Zoysa looking particularly impressive on his comeback, hooking Dillon with aplomb.
Teams West Indies 1 Daren Ganga, 2 Chris Gayle, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Brian Lara, 5 Carl Hooper (capt), 6 Marlon Samuels, 7 Ridley Jacobs (wk), 8 Mervyn Dillon, 9 Colin Stuart, 10 Dinanath Ramnarine, 11 Pedro Collins.
