Captain Stephen Fleming has challenged his fringe seam bowlers to earn their places in New Zealand's attack for next week's second Test against Australia.

New Zealand, who almost snatched an unlikely victory in the drawn first Test in Brisbane, play South Australia in a four-day tour match starting in Adelaide on Friday.

Fleming, batsman Nathan Astle and allrounder Chris Cairns, who has only returned to the side this month after a year-long knee injury, will be rested ahead of the second Test starting in Hobart, Tasmania on November 22.

Seamers Chris Martin, who has played seven Tests, and the uncapped Shane Bond will be given every opportunity to press their claims for Test selection.

Both were named on Thursday in the team to play South Australia. Craig McMillan will captain the side.

Fast bowler Dion Nash, who is suffering from a stomach injury, has returned to New Zealand while left-arm seamer Shayne O'Connor is another casualty from the first Test and is battling a knee injury.

"There is a Test spot up for grabs, maybe two, and they're stupid if they don't see that," Fleming said. "I think they've been made very aware of what's up for grabs and they'll be playing very well, very hard."

New Zealand coach Denis Aberhart said Martin, Bond and Daryl Tuffey, who also missed out on a place in the first Test team, were competing for one or possibly two spots.

"We are continuing to monitor Shayne O'Connor's progress and his availability will probably determine whether we are looking for one or two new seam bowlers for the second test," Aberhart said.

Aberhart said opening batsman Mark Richardson had recovered from a hamstring injury suffered in the first Test.
