To err is human

Umpire Daryl Harper has admitted that he got it wrong when turning down a confident appeal against Justin Langer on the first day at the Gabba. Langer was struck on the pad by an inswinging delivery from Chris Cairns with the fifth ball of the day. Replays suggested the ball would have struck the middle stump but Harper was unmoved. Langer, who was on 0 at the time, went on to score 104 in an opening stand of 224.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Harper said, ""I don't think you need to be a Rhodes Scholar to have a look at the replay and see what happened.

"Unfortunately there are a lot of things in cricket, whether you're a batsman, bowler, fielder or umpire, that you would like to pass over and move on to the next delivery - it looks like that was one of them."
