Change of venue for England's first game
Wisden CricInfo staff - November 8, 2001

Revised tour itinerary The opening match of England's tour in Bombay is to be switched from the Gymkhana ground to the Wankhede Stadium, after concerns were raised about security at the original venue.

The Gymkhana ground has no perimeter fencing, and so a decision was made to move the match, which is against a Mumbai Cricket Association XI. The game, due to take place on November 18-19, is now likely to be played against a backdrop of building works, as the Wankhede Stadium is undergoing refurbishment.

"It is a late development," said Mayank Khandwalla of the MCA. "There is some repair work going on in the West Stand, so the Wankhede Stadium may not be in the shape we want it to be for a tour match."

That is not a major concern for the England & Wales Cricket Board. Spokesman Mark Hodgson said: "The security of the players has always been the ECB's No. 1 priority on this tour."
