A tenacious, open-stanced batsman in the mould of Javed Miandad, Naved Latif started young - he was only 17 when he made his first-class debut for Sargodha - and took some time to mature. But it was worth the wait. He registered his maiden first-class century in his sixth season, 1998-99, and on November 19, 2000, he creamed the Gujranwala bowlers for a whopping 394 at the Jinnah Stadium, Sargodha - the tenth-highest first-class score of all time, and the highest triple century ever. With 1352 runs in 18 matches that season he forced his way into the international reckoning, and finally made his debut as an opener at Sharjah in October 2001. In a microcosm of his career to date, he made a slow start, scoring 7 in his first match, and he had crawled to a tortuous 33 from 78 balls in his second when a full-toss from Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya sparked him into life. Runs flowed, all around the wicket, as he raced to a hundred and added 219 with Inzamam-ul-Haq to win the match. He is also a purveyor of occasional medium-pacers. Andrew Miller
