England happy with security - says Dalmiya Wisden CricInfo staff - November 1, 2001
Jagmohan Dalmiya, the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, has said that representatives of the England & Wales Cricket Board and Professional Cricketers' Association are happy with security measures for England's forthcoming tour. John Carr and Tim O'Gorman, along with Peter Holland, secretary at the British High Commission in Delhi, met Dalmiya in Calcutta today to discuss security arrangements following concerns expressed in the wake of September 11. "The talks were more focused on the tour," Dalmiya said, "and not whether or not it will go ahead. India is a safe place to visit. The whole world knows that." Earlier today it was confirmed that the New Zealand's women cricketers have abandoned a proposed three-Test tour of India. Martin Snedden, the chief executive of New Zealand Cricket, described the level of risk as "unacceptable". But such a relatively low-profile tour was never likely to receive the same level of security as England's, and it seems Carr and O'Gorman do not share Snedden's misgivings. England's tour should now begin on schedule on November 14. Andy Caddick and Robert Croft pulled out on Monday, with their replacements expected to be announced on Friday.
