Victoria annex One Day title WPCA Staff - 29 March 2001
Victoria won their first major WPCA title when they defeated Bellville in the 1A/1B One Day competition by 100 runs at Newlands last night. Batting first, Vics were 23/3 early on, then a 146 run partnership between Ashwell Price and Warren Wyngaardt Vics eventually reached 249/6 after the 45 overs. Ashwell Prince scored a brilliant 152 n.o. off 132 balls. Bellville were never really in it, losing wickets all the way, and were bowled out for 149 with plenty of overs left. All the bowlers chipped in - a very disciplined performance all round. It was a great evening at Newlands with hundreds of supporters from both clubs (the majority Vics people of course) sitting in mainly 2 big groups, braaiing and partying and supporting their teams very enthusiastically. On Saturday Vics will be expecting to complete the double. Bellville are still 70-odd behind on the 1st innings with 3 wickets down. Vics will have to win outright of course, as UCT are on the brink of thrashing Almar. Weather permitting, it should be a formality though at Chukker Road.
